Spoiled Am I.

Yes I admit it.

I'm spoiled rotten.

Most of it isn't my fault though.

Really.

Oh, I know you'll roll your eyes at that omission, but it would be dumb for me to take full blame on this one.

Today my spoiled rotten self learned a lesson in how if technology fails, something doesn't get done.

Well, duh.

But I'll explain.

We were gone for a few days, and therefore the laundry situation piled up, because I didn't have a laundry system where my family was staying. And furthermore, I was on holidays so a part of me was quite thrilled that I could ignore the soiled clothing and stick it out of sight while I drank wine, relaxed in a chair, and watch my kids try to injure themselves happily with their cousins.

Reality struck a blow when upon our return home, and the unpacking was done, the amount of smelly, damp, attire was most overwhelming. Especially to a person who has to have every item of material in the house clean, hung up, or folded neatly in dressers.

I think that comes from being one of 12 kids in a homeschooling household in the country.

Laundry was a nightmare if left unattended for an hour.

So, as my OCD problem persists, nags and completely consumes my head, I dig into the problem and throw in a load of wash. I do this two more times, as well as care for my five kids and their various needs. The third time I put wash on, I take a break, send the kids outside with a cookie, and check my email. Since I've been away, and I clearly cannot leave any unopened ones in my inbox, it took a while.

Then I called my sister.

As I was catching up with her, I climbed in to the laundry room to transfer the clothes to my dryer, and realized I was witnessing rapids forming across the floor.

The water was pouring out from underneath my washing machine.

While sister chatted away, I quickly turned the machine off, the water off, and found stuff to start soaking up the enormous amount of liquid pooling along the wall.

Then my children discovered the indoor swimming area and immediately started splashing water at each other, youngest one proceeding to lie down and try his skills with the back stroke. I obviously need to take them to the beach more often.

Realizing the situation wouldn't improve without intervention I said goodbye to my sister and assessed the damage.

I was most concerned about the load in the washer. It hadn't gone through the rinse cycle, so I was trying to figure out how to get the clothes to the bathtub so I could do it by hand. I chased the children back outside, and warned them I was on the edge so they needed to steer clear for a while.

This is where my frustration mounted. As I emptied the washer, I realized just how much I depend on the appliance to keep me happy.

I also realized how spoiled I am to have these appliances to make my life easier. I would never not have one, and I was contemplating on what model we would purchase next, feeling that this is a necessity, and something I couldn't live without, something I'm entitled to.

And that's why this isn't totally my fault.
It is engraved in our head that we must have appliances, which ones are the latest and greatest and better and cost effective.

Which ones will make the chore a pleasant experience.

The truth is, how many people actually own a washing machine? There are Countries where most of the population still uses river water, and some choose to serve in those Countries and therefore give up "necessary" things.

I am thankful that I could wash my family's attire by hand if I needed to, but more so that I don't have to.

I like to be spoiled.

  1. I get it completely. When the washer breaks down, my whole life is a shambles. I can live a brief time with no dryer, but the washer is my friend.

    As is the dishwasher.

And styrofoam plates when company comes.

No washer makes Mommy something something... ;)

That totally sucks. Did you run to the laundromat to finish??

Glad you had a relaxing getaway, though!
